Choosing the Right Mathematics Course

Choices, choices, choices.... This guide is intended to help you select the mathematics course that is most appropriate for you. If, after reading this, you still have questions or concerns, please make an appointment to meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Students with AP Credit: If you received a 4 or a 5 on the BC Calculus test, then you will receive 8 credits in mathematics and have placed out of Math 111-112. You should choose from among Math 211 Multivariable Calculus, Math 221 Linear Algebra, and Math 212 Differential Equations. If you intend to major in Computer Science, then you should take Math 221.

If you received a 4 or a 5 on the AB Calculus test, then you will receive 4 credits in mathematics and have placed out of Math 111. We have a special course just for you: Math 112z. This is a second semester calculus class for freshmen who have placed out of Math 111 via the AP or I.B. test. Note: Math 112z is a freshmen-only course and is only offered in the fall.

Students with IB Credit: If you received a score of 5, 6, or 7 on the higher level mathematics IB test, you will receive 4 credits and can take Math 112z.

Placement: If you have taken a one semester calculus course that was a regular college/university course, then you should take Math 112 or Math 116. If you have taken two semesters of calculus at a college or university, then you should take Math 211 (or Math 221 or Math 212).

A Guide to 100-level Mathematics Courses

Math 107 - Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Elementary methods for calculating probabilities along with the construction of statistical models.

Math 109 - Game Theory, Graphs, and Mathematical Models

Game theory, graph theory, and other mathematical topics. Game theory computes optimal strategies in simple situations where there is conflict. Graphs are points connected by lines that could be models for practical situations. We aim to gain experience in confronting, studying and solving problem.

Math 111 - Calculus I

This is a standard first semester calculus course. Topics covered include derivatives and limits, max-min problems, related rates problems, antiderivatives, and the definite integral.

Math 112 - Calculus II

This is a standard second semester calculus course. Topics covered include exponential and logarithmic functions; techniques of integration; numerical methods of integration; improper integrals; infinite sequences and series; polar coordinates. Math 112 is a prerequisite for all 200 level mathematics courses.

Math 112z - Calculus II

This is a second semester calculus course designed for freshman who have received a 4 or a 5 on the AB part of the AP Calculus test, or a 5, 6, or 7 on the higher-level I.B. math test.

Math 115 - Life Science Calculus I

Similar to Math 111 with an emphasis on applications to and examples from the biological sciences. If you plan on majoring in Biology or Chemistry and/or you intend to go to medical school, this class would be a better choice than Math 111.

Math 116 - Life Science Calculus I

Second semester calculus with an emphasis on applications to biology. Topics covered include differential equations, modeling biological systems, probability, and statistics. Students intending to take higherlevel mathematics courses should take Math 112 instead of Math 116.

Math 119 - Calculus with Business Applications

This class is for students who plan to enter the business school. Please note that space is very limited in Math 119 and you may not get into a section in fall of your freshmen year.
